Education and Mentorship
As physician educators, our faculty actively contribute to the education and development of future healthcare professionals through a combination of clinical teaching, formal lectures, and mentorship.
Our faculty are deeply involved in education and mentoring medical students, physical assistant students, and pediatric residents. We contribute to their growth and learning through:
- Formal lectures during academic half-days and afternoon teaching sessions
- Clinical teaching during patient encounters in outpatient clinics and the newborn nursery
- Leadership roles within the College of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics Residency Program
Additionally, our faculty serve as course leaders and rotation directors, overseeing both required and elective rotations for medical students and pediatric residents. We also mentor learners at all levels, guiding advocacy projects, quality improvement initiatives, and research investigations to ensure a comprehensive educational experience that promotes both clinical and academic excellence.
Research and Innovation
Our faculty are actively engaged in diverse research initiatives focused on optimizing pediatric care delivery and improving health outcomes for all children. Our division’s research spans several key areas:
- Clinical research in pediatric care
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Health services and outcomes research
- Preventative and community-based research
- Medical education research
- Case reports
Our faculty’s research includes numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences, with key faculty leaders recognized as experts in their fields. Faculty have led studies exploring vaccine cocooning practices, using technology to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric diseases and optimizing preventive care. Research has also investigated how epigenomics affects infant temperament, while quality improvement projects have focused on minimizing painful procedures during well visits and decreasing the spread of COVID-19 and influenza through improved vaccine coverage. Additionally, our work examines how social determinants of health influence healthcare delivery from infancy through adolescence.
Many of these studies involve medical students and pediatric residents as co-investigators, demonstrating our strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of academic scientists. Our faculty’s research not only advances knowledge in general pediatrics but also reflects our division’s dedication to improving care for children and training future healthcare providers.
